Agents. do you really need one here in Boston..

This poses to be a good question when I hear it. The answer is yes and no. No if you are planning not to take this that seriously and you want to extra and stand in work. You can promote yourself. But if you want to audition for speaking roles for major films coming into town then the answer is yes. These agents mostly get paid on commission so it is their goal to find you work. Best agency in Boston is Maggie Inc. but I believe you have to be in the union.

I had always been told you don't need one in Boston. I'm new to SAG and would like to hear from long-time members if they feel you need one.

It's not realistic to expect to have one in Boston...if you're SAG, there are only two SAG-franchised agencies which are the only ones you are permitted to contract with. But the reality is that Maggie, Inc. is not in it for actors...they're in it first and foremost for models, and are very selective from that angle. The other is Model Club Inc. - though I'm less familiar with them. It's nice if they sign you for modeling, and happen to do some extra footwork to get you acting auditions, but there's no reason you can't get those yourself by making yourself known to the local casting directors and getting on file with all with the local casting agencies. For now, that is still how it works in this region. The vast majority of local actors are freelancers who spend much of their time networking.

I think it helps to have one if you're looking for speaking roles. Especially since some modeling/acting agencies have developed great relationships with the casting agencies. I've heard the best are Maggie Inc. and New England Models Group.
